William Crosswy Dale III's Obituary
DALE III, James Crosswy (Jimmy) Age 73. Passed away July 10, 2009 after an extended illness. A practicing lawyer and member of the Nashville Bar and Tennessee Bar for over forty-five years, his specialty was Corporate and Partnership law. His contractual agreements reflect a great respect for and understanding of the law, as well as the needs of his clients. A native Nashvillian, he was Governor of Volunteer Boy's State and a Representative to Boys' Nation. He graduated from MBA where he was on the varsity basketball team, editor of the Bell, a member of the National Honor Society and the Key Club. He won numerous academic medals and was voted most intelligent and most popular his senior year. He was Valedictorian of his class. He attended Vanderbilt on a full naval scholarship. He was elected Mr. Commodore, and was a member of the Student Senate and the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He graduated Cum Laude. He always said that he had traveled the world with his Uncle (Sam). After serving three years in the Navy, he attended Vanderbilt Law School on a full scholarship, and received his Doctorate of Juris Prudence. Again, he won many honors and was Note Editor for the Vanderbilt Law Review. Married and with two sons, he graduated second in his class. While in law school, he was a law clerk for Judge Miller. He was an attorney for the State of Tennessee before he joined his father at the firm of Goodpasture, Carpenter, and Dale. Jimmy was a Sunday School teacher at Westminster Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. He was on the board of directors for Franklin Road Academy, the Madison Utility District and the Cumberland at Green Hills. The pleasure of learning and teaching led him to the Nashville School of Law where he taught thirteen years. Fortunately, life was not all work: he loved hunting ducks, fishing the streams of Middle Tennessee, and playing short stop with his friends on his beloved Diamond Dusters softball team. Sharing the joys of the great outdoors with his three sons was a special pleasure. Besides hunting, fishing and camping with his sons, Jim was active in cub scouts, coaching YMCA basketball teams, driving hook-ups, attending every game or match that involved his sons, working in the MBA concession stand, driving paper routes and in general, giving his time to his sons' activities. His example was to work hard and never feel above the labor of any task. Jim was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his love of reading, playing "Scrabble", watching war movies and westerns, grocery shopping and cooking (especially for others). He was always available to friends in trouble and often took them his own fried chicken. Micah 6:8 tells that God requires a person to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly. That is a description of Jim Dale and his life of service to his family, his friends, his clients and his students. Preceded in death by his parents, James C., Jr. and Ina Ingram Dale, and his son, James C. Dale IV. He is survived by his wife of over fifty years, Helen Harris Dale; sons, Jeffrey Harris Dale, Robert Young Dale (Jan) and grandchildren, Stuart, Rachel and Nathan Dale; sister, Karin Dale Coble; brothers, John Gilbert Dale, Oceanport, NJ and Lewis Ingram Dale (Elizabeth), Grosse Pointe Farms, MI; his brother-in-law, Dr. Louis Harris (Gail), Cherry Hill, NJ; uncle, John Ingram; cousins, Raymond Ingram (Sarah) and Ina Ingram Hitt (John) and twelve nieces and nephews. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., at the Cheek House of First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Road, Nashville, on July 13th, 2009. A Memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on July 13th at 3 p.m., with Rev. Mark Devries officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Nashville School of Law, 4013 Armory Oaks Drive, Nashville, TN 37024.
