William W. Newell's Obituary
NEWELL, William W.; Age 83 of Nashville, TN, passed away, April 14, 2012. Survived by wife of 64 years, Edna Gober; children, Lynda (David) Bivins; Wade (Penny) Newell; Scott (Linda) Newell; grandchildren Lyndsay and Wilson; sisters, Nancy Rhodes and Peggy (Carl) Moore; sisters-in-law, Dotsie (Randle) Deaton and Pam (Bob) Black. Mr. Newell worked for 50 years at Foster Engineering, Inc, Nashville, and was president and owner from 1975 until retirement in 2000. Preceded in death by his parents William Wood and Margaret Wilson (Duchess) Newell, who moved from Colorado to what was then, Jacksonville, TN in 1920, where his father was advertising manager for the Nashville Industrial Corporation. His grandfather, Fred G. Newell, was superintendent in charge of dismantling the government’s DuPont managed powder plant, and was assisted by his uncle George Wilson, who wrote to the US Postal Service in 1923 to suggest changing the town name to Old Hickory. Thus, Jacksonville became Old Hickory on December 1, 1923, and the family’s deep ties and love of the community continue to this day. A funeral ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 2PM in the chapel of Spring Hill Funeral Home. Visitation will be today, Monday April 16, 2012 from 4-8PM and on Tuesday from Noon until 2PM at Spring Hill. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center.
