William Lee Wine's Obituary
Sergeant Major William Lee Wine, a dedicated patriot and a true family man, passed away on March 24th, 2024, in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Born in Higginsville, Missouri, in 1949, he lived a life of service, honor, and unwavering commitment.
As a youth, William heard the call to serve as a Catholic bishop and was enrolled and resided in a seminary at 14 years old before enlisting in the United States Navy, where he served with distinction. His dedication and exceptional performance earned him the prestigious title of Sailor of the Year for two consecutive years. His love for his country and desire to make a difference led him to transition to the United States Army, where he continued his remarkable career.
Over the course of 38 years, William climbed the ranks, demonstrating leadership, courage, and resilience. His commitment to duty propelled him to the esteemed position of Sergeant Major. His influence extended beyond the uniform; he was a mentor, a role model, and a source of inspiration to countless soldiers.
Despite his professional achievements, William’s heart remained firmly rooted in his faith and family.
In recent times, William faced a formidable adversary: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Despite the challenges posed by this cruel disease, he fought valiantly, displaying the same courage that defined his military career. His steadfast spirit and determination inspired all who knew him.
Today, we bid farewell to a remarkable man—a patriot, a hero, and a beloved family member. William Lee Wine’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched. May he rest in peace, knowing that his impact on this world will endure for generations to come.

William is preceded in death by his parents Homer Floyd Wine and Mary Ann Wine, and sister Judy Wine. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Janelle Eileen Wine; children Heidi Beth Smith (Tommy), Jessica Jane Domino (David), Terra Janelle Mears (Crystal), and Cody James Mears; brothers Jim (Cyndy), Bob (Sheila), Larry (Janice), and Terry (Marilyn); and a host of extended family and dear friends.
William will be laid to rest at Nashville National Cemetery on Friday, April 5th, 2024, at 2:00 in the afternoon.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, “Where Nashville Comes to Remember.”
