Mrs. Wilma Jean Phelps' Obituary
Wilma Jean Phelps, age 78 of Goodlettsville, passed away at home on July 2, 2015. Wilma was born in Sneedville, Tennessee on July 13, 1936 to the late William and Grace Gilliam.
Her family recalls that Wilma was an extraordinary cook. “That lady could throw down during the holidays,” remembers her daughter, Juanita. The family spent many holidays together. Wilma was a quiet sort of person, not one to gravitate toward large groups. But, she liked having the answers to things and liked it when people came to her with questions. “She was the keeper of the family flame,” says son-in-law, Gavin. Wilma remembered familial ties from generations long before and was proud to pass the family story on to younger generations.
Wilma was a very family-oriented person. She loved her children, and doted on her grandchildren. She leaves behind a large family and an impressive legacy. She will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Paul Edward Phelps, Sr.; and daughters, Priscilla Haynes and Susan Phelps.
Wilma is survived by her children, Paul Edward Phelps, II (JoAnn), Kenny Phelps (Monnie), Charles Phelps (Kim), Teresa Phelps (Locke), Juanita Matlock (Gavin), Christie Derryberry (Gary) and Tabbie Phelps(Marlene Binkley); as well as twenty grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
Visitation will be private. Family and friends will gather for a graveside service on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 1:00pm in the Greenlawn Garden of Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as Pallbearers.
Arrangements entrusted to Spring Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5110 Gallatin Road, Nashville, Tennessee 37216. (615)865-1101 www.springhillfh.com
