Carol Artis Spining of Brentwood, passed away at home with her loving family on June 8. Her many friendships and faith in God supported her in her struggle against ALS.
Mrs. Spining was born on October 1, 1944 in Ironton, OH, the second child of John H. and Helen B. Artis. She graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Masters in Elementary Education. She married her college sweetheart, Bill Spining in 1966. In 1974, she led a community effort to fund and build, what became the Oak Hills Swim and Racquet Club, in Mayfield, KY. The Spining’s moved to Brentwood in 1982. She was the proprietor of The Sugar Drop where she enjoyed teaching cake decorating and candy making classes. After selling the Sugar Drop, she became an avid bridge player at the Vanderbilt Bridge Club of Nashville. She became a Silver Life Master in 2018.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, William “Bill” Spining, her children, Mark Spining (Patty), Laura Spining Dodson (Andrew), and Carl Spining (Erin), her grandchildren, Sarah, Megan, and Holly Spining; Drew and Sam Dodson; Molly Miller (Chris) Patrick (Megan), Mary Caitlin, and Jack Spining, as well as her sister, Kay Smith, and brother, John Artis.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 12, 2020 at Spring Hill Funeral Home 6-8 PM. The funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 13, 2020 in the Spring Hill Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Joe Pennel officiating. Burial will take place in the Historic Spring Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, her family is asking that you donate to the Vanderbilt Bridge Club of Nashville, ALS of Middle Tennessee, or Brentwood United Methodist Church.
