Mr. Donald Louis Harned's Obituary
Donald Louis Harned, age 93 years, passed away peacefully on his favorite day of the year, December 25, 2017.
Preceded in death by his parents, Louis Porter and Anna Laura Harned; his wife of 39 years, Evelyn Wootten Harned; his daughter Melissa Thomas; granddaughter Laura Thomas; sister Margaret Groves; and daughter-in-law Debbie Harned.
Survived by sons Dale [Kathie] Harned and Kelly [Jane] Harned; grandchildren Shelley [Dave] Matthews, Krista [Jason] Delk, LeAnn [Jay] Blankman, Alan [Caroline] Harned, and Aaron Harned; step-grandchildren Jordan Turner,
Alec and Trent Willett; great-grandchildren Cole and Callie Matthews, Tyson and Kinze Delk, and Evelyn Layne Harned; niece Kay Brigham; nephew Jerry Groves; son-in-law Richard Thomas; and many dear friends including “His Teachers.”
Born June 19, 1924, a native of Robertson County, he served in the United States Army during WWII as an artillery gunner in the European Theatre under General George Patton. After the war, he received his bachelor and masters degrees from George Peabody College. He taught at Jere Baxter, served as principal at Alex Green Elementary, and opened McGavock Elementary School as the first principal in 1956 and served there until he retired 27 years later. An outstanding and dedicated educator, he could remember every student [and their parents] that he taught.
Don was an active deacon at Inglewood Baptist Church and a dedicated member of the Meals on Wheels Program participating until a week before his passing.
Pallbearers are Jay Blankman, Jason Delk, Aaron Harned, Alan Harned, Cole Matthews, and Dave Matthews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 28th from 2 to 7 PM at Spring Hill Funeral Home in Madison, Tennessee. A private graveside service will be led by Dr. Kevin Shrum. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Meals on Wheels Program of Inglewood Baptist Church, Nashville.
