SOUTHERLAND, Frances Marie, age 87 of Nashville passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Miss Southerland graduated from East High School. She had a Bachelor of Music in piano from George Peabody College for Teachers; 3 Semesters at Read Obituary
It has been many years since I served as a Vandy Divinity School student at Tulip St. I sang in the choir which Frances led at the time. She was a very special woman and musician, and I will always remember her kindness and what a blessing she and Bill Barbour were to me. They were like loving grandparents! I know she passed some years ago, but as I am learning of her legacy online, I wanted to give thanksgiving for her life and generosity.
Having known Frances Sutherland. Just about all of my life. My family joined Tulip Street Church Easter of 1956. And I just loved her. She went own to be my Choral teacher for four years at East Nashville High School. I sang in the choir at Tulip at the age of twelve. Until I married in Dec of 1969 in the chapel at Tulip Street. I was sad to learn of her death. She was always smiling at me and often called me "Suga" . Happy memories of a wonderful teacher and great Christian woman. God Bless Her

As a graduate of East Nashville High School in 1976 . . . I dearly loved Miss Southerland. She was an incredible woman who loved music and working with her students. I feel truly blessed to have had a part of her in my life. Julie Harrison Wheeler (Class of '76)
Miss Southerland has alway been on my mind and in my heart she really cared for her students and a part of me me is better because of her, I can sing.

Ms. Frances was one of the kindest people I have met. A bad day at Grace Manor could be wiped away by hiding out in her room for a few minutes. It just won't be the same without her.
I remember Ms. Southerland from East High School. Class of 1978. She was an awesome person. Condolences to the family.
Sue and I, sisters of Pat Berry, loved visiting Frances at her home and eating out with
her years ago. She was always so cheerful and made us feel good to be around her.
We shall miss visiting her and give our condolences to the family.

My friendship with Frances began in 1957 when we started teaching at East Nashville
Junior High. It continued later when we were on the faculty of East High. For many years we were fellow members of the Upsilon Chapter of ADK. What wonderful
memories I have.
How fortunate are the thousands of East Nashville "kids" who had Frances as their
choral teacher.
I extend sympathy to the younger generations of the Southerland family.
