Mr. Joseph Grant Matty's Obituary
Joseph G. Matty of Nashville passed away at the VA Hospital on Tuesday, September 1, 2015. He was born at home in Alicia, PA, on October 17, 1918, to immigrant Czechoslovakian parents, George and Susan Matty. Joseph is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Susan Tchinski of California, PA; and brothers, Mike Matty of Brownsville, PA and George Matty of Waynesburg, PA. Joe graduated from high school in Brownsville, PA, attended Carnegie Tech in Pittsburg, PA, and served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was very proud to be a veteran.
Joe met and married Anna Mae Johnson of Nashville on February 18, 1944, while stationed in Tampa, FL. After the war, they lived in Pittsburgh, PA before returning to Nashville a few years later. Joe worked as a butcher, salesman, and for many years sold insurance for Shenandoah Life, managing the local office at the time of his retirement.
Joe was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman, often appearing in the Tennessean with his big catch. He also played semi-professional baseball in Nashville, and became a trophy-winning bowler. During the 1950’s he coached several park league baseball teams.
Joe was a member of the Jackson Park Church of Christ and every night before sleeping, would say the Lord’s Prayer in Slovack as his mother had taught him when he was a child.
Survivors include nephews John Tchinski, Mike Tchinski, Mel Hadley, Kenny Bomar, Scott Bomar; and nieces, Frances Matty, Irene Durda, Helen Vickers, Betty Labin, Marilyn Sylvester; and several great nieces, nephews and many friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 9th to include Masonic funeral rites at Spring Hill Funeral Home. A celebration of life funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 10, 2015 in the chapel of Spring Hill Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Historic Spring Hill Cemetery.
