Uncle Vernon always had a smile on his face and had a great sense of humor. When I would text him he would reply "I am getting slower but I am movin and if I am movin I am groovin." I did not get to know him till I was older.....needless to say I wish I could have gotten to know him more. I am thankful to God for the times I did see him and talk to him. We came home for Thanksgiving in 2019 and were able to see him and all the great aunts and uncles. He was able to meet our 2 children (at the time).....those are moments I will cherish forever. He is now reunited with his beloved Clara and his 5 brothers. I/We love you Uncle Vernon. You rest now in the arms of your Savior Jesus. I will see you soon.

Dear Melinda and family,
Vernon was such a dear friend to us - I called him 'Uncle Vernon' too. He and Clara always had a special place in my heart. I was just around 20 years old when we met in California when Clara and I worked together. They both took me under my wing - and we always stayed close.
I talked with Vernon just a few weeks ago and he brought me up to date with what was going on and shared his unique perspective on things going on in the world, baseball, football and then his health- and he didn't complain. We shared a few good laughs and memories too.
I loved his voice. He would tell me, just because he knew I loved to hear him say it, - like 'The train has left station.' That was a nod to his 30 plus years working at the Southern Pacific Railroad. And when he first started, he worked on the train that went from San Jose to San Francisco and back again.
He got to ride that train again in 2014 when he came to California and we went to the San Francisco Giants World Series together! We had a blast that night - he sang 'take me out to the ballgame' and we had a beautiful view of the City. We also went to the SF 49er Museum and we visited where he and Clara used to live here in San Jose. My children came over and we had a nice time together. They remember most how Vernon would drive them around in the golf cart when he and Clara lived in Elk Grove.
Vernon was a dear friend and we loved him. I can only smile that he and 'Clara Jean, the baby,' as he used to say are together again.
We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.
