Many of my memories of Uncle Neal didn't involve just him. There are many family memories of Christmas holidays on the farm that I'd love to re-live.
He was a good man, about as tough as they come and down-to-Earth. And if you got out of line, he'd be quick to put you back there.
I remember one time, I guess I was about 4 or 5 years old, I was talking to him and Uncle Bubba on the side of the house and I sat on a stack of bricks he had there, I assume, left over from building the house or to make a fire pit. Both uncles told me to get down and I said, "I don't have to."
Uncle Neal stepped up and said, "Oh yes you DO have to!" Before I knew it, he snatched me up, had me on the ground and gave me a whipping and back on my feet before I had a chance to start crying. LOL!
I never got another whipping from him, tho there were a couple of times I should have.
Somewhere in a bag of old pictures, I have a picture of my 8th birthday with him, Aunt Betty and my cousins Cindy and Jeremy in attendance with some others.
My personal favorite story of him involved my oldest brother and first step-dad (RIP to all) going out to a bonfire. I won't go into it any further here.
It was also good to see him when I got older and got involved in road construction.
I guess it was the heavy equipment that gave more conversation. The last few times I got to see him and talk to him, I got to learn more about him.
He was an awesome man.
Thank you for the memories and where many of them took place, Uncle Neal!
