Melvyn Sydney Foster's Obituary
Melvyn Sydney Foster, of Nashville, passed away peacefully at his home on April 2, 2024. Melvyn was born in Shelbyville, Tennessee on December 3, 1942, to Julia Savage Hamilton Foster. At an early age, he would move to Nashville, the place he would call home for over 75 years. He was a 1961 graduate of West High School. Following high school graduation, Melvyn followed in the footsteps of his beloved mother and involved himself in the hair and fashion industry. His career spanned almost 51 years in and around Nashville at such places as The Duchess, Rich-Schwartz, Julia’s, The Continental, the Gazebo, and the Patio. He retired in 2013. Throughout his life, Melvyn loved to travel and frequently visited New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. His journeys also took him to several beauty and hair conventions in Europe. His letter of faith still remains at the downtown First Baptist Church in Nashville. Melvyn was an avid reader, and had a knowledge base for British history and movie history unsurpassed. As a hobby, he had a great interest in going to estate sales and consignment shops. “Mel” was a true and loyal friend to so many. He will be missed.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Hamilton Billings Baker, a brother, Andrew Hamilton, and his beloved aunt and uncle, Buck and Tyne Foster. Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, as well as a host of friends.
Visitation at Spring Hill Funeral Home will take place Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 10:00 am followed by Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 11:00 am at Spring Hill Cemetery at 5110 Gallatin Pike in Nashville.
