Mrs Milton Elizabeth Curtis Starnes' Obituary
After living a full and generous life, Mrs. Milton Elizabeth Curtis Starnes died peacefully on March 13, 2015, at 97 years of age.
She was born April 19, 1917 in Hendersonville.
Milton was preceded in death by her husband, A.D. Starnes; parents, Judge Martin R. Curtis, Sr. and Earline Dorris Curtis; and siblings, Robert, Charles, Martin, Jr., Emmaline Reese, Katherine Rice, and step-son Bedford Starnes. She is survived by her brothers, Donald, John, and Allen (Carol) Curtis, and sisters Ann (Joe) Saunders and Earline (Don) Dixon. She is also survived by her step-children, Joanne (Monty) Spears, Wanda (J.E.) Robinson, and Buddy (Barbara) Starnes, as well as 25 nieces and nephews, 47 great nieces and nephews, and 21 great-great nieces and nephews.
Milton was educated at Hendersonville School and graduated from Gallatin High School. She received her B.S. Degree from Peabody College in 1939 and began her teaching career in Hendersonville that same year. She retired from Hendersonville High School in 1980 after 41 years of dedication, loyalty, and love for the students and faculty of HHS.
She was involved in Big Brothers, March of Dimes, Sumner County Retired Teachers, Alpha Delta Kappa, Rock Castle, Home Demonstration Club, and Hendersonville Church of Christ. She was a recipient of the Sertoma "Service to Mankind Award" and the March of Dimes "Humanitarian Award."
Her nephews will serve as pall bearers.
The family requests memorial gifts be directed to the charity of your choice.
Visitation hours are Monday, March 16, 1:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, March 17, 10:00 a.m. until noon, with funeral services on Tuesday at noon. Both visitation and funeral will be at Hendersonville Church of Christ, 107 Rockland Road.
