Dear Betty, just today I came across something that reminded me of Newton and you and then my online search took me to his obituary. I offer my deepest condolences. I lived next door to you In Henderson, KY (name Pat Darling at that time). Newton delivered my first child, my daughter Lesley, soon to be 57. I have fond memories of you both and our time on Barker Road. I send my sympathy to you and family.
Dr. Griffin delivered both of my children. Later he delivered my first grandson just prior to his retirement. That grandson just graduated from UNC Wilmington. Obviously, I knew him for several years. He was a wonderful Doctor and a kind and gentle soul. I am so sorry for your loss. May he rest in eternal peace.

Such fond memories of Newton—so many, in fact, that we named our son Griffin.
Whether it was his enviable knowledge of our family’s apple, the Benjamin Davis (yes, our family tree has an apple in it!) or showing my husband how to jumpstart a grill with a hair dryer (!) his elegance, humor and intellect were an inspiration. He will be missed.

I practiced OB/GYN in Raleigh with Newton from 1985 through 1999. He and Betty were extremely helpful in getting me introduced to and established in the medical community here. He was a very knowledgeable and skilled physician who was extremely dedicated to his patients and took his professional very seriously. He could be very taciturn and quiet at times, but then come right out with a very incisive remark which revealed his very dry sense of humor. I will always be grateful for the time I spent practicing with him. It's fair to say they don't make them like him any more!
