Mr. Richard "Gene" Harper's Obituary
Richard Eugene Harper, age 89- born February 27, 1927 went home to be with his Lord on August 12, 2016. An Elder at 11th Street Church of Christ for 47 years, Gene retired from Capital Engraving and Vanderbilt University where he ushered at sporting events for over 40 years. Preceded in death by parents James Rufus and Annie (Hadley) Harper, Survived by wife of 72 years, Opal (Sherrod) Harper, Daughters Faye (Fate) Evans, Dianne (Joe) Smith, Don (Jackie) Harper. Grand-daughters Teressa Melton (Michael) Mooneyhan, Tabathia Evans (Crockett) Parks, Gania (Patrick) Jones Great Grandchildren; Fate Evans Melton, Samuel L. Melton, Abigail Parks, Charles C. Parks IV and Jackson Jones. Preceded in death by siblings: Gwendelyn Held, Dewey Harper, Charles Harper, Glenda Cobb, and Rufus Harper. Surviving sisters: Patricia Gleaves and Shirley Robertson. Pall bearers; Bobby Wayne Gentry, Jimmy Harper, Jerry Harper, Drew Melton, Logan Melton, and Charlie Parks. Honorary Pallbearers; Richard Mark Robertson, David Harper, Douglas Harper, Timothy Held, Thomas Held, William Held and Joseph Held. A special thank you to his long-time physician Dr. Charles Daniels and the staff at Alive Hospice, especially Rachael Sherman and Jenny Grant. Visitation at Spring Hill Funeral Home, Monday August 15 from noon until 8 PM. Services on Tuesday August 16 at 10AM with visitation one hour prior. Donations in Mr. Harper’s name can be made to Alive Hospice and/or Churches of Christ Disaster Relief.
