I have so many great memories with Joe in Troop 251. Being a member of that troop under Joe’s guidance prepared so many young men for adulthood. Sure, we learned to start a fire with sticks, survive overnight with a sleeping bag and a canteen…walk around like an idiot asking other troops for a left handed smoke shifter( it’s not real FYI), but the manners and life lessons I carry to this day will never be forgotten. Take your cap off when entering a building, say thank you when exchanging an open pocket knife. And even the art of slamming a 30lb Christmas tree to shake the dead needles. (Kinda tough when you weigh 58lbs). But Joe always believed in us and had the patience to see that we did too.
I’ll remember Shiloh, Montgomery Bell State park, Strasser’s farm, Cornelia Fort airport and of course the rapids of the Buffalo River. Just like every campsite, Joe left this world better than he found it. RIP friend!
