Dr. Ted Mason George's Obituary
Dr. Ted Mason George, age 94 of Nashville, passed away on July 26, 2017. The youngest of nine children born in Lewisburg, TN to William Cullen and Myrtle Mooney George, he was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings and his wife, Jean Fisher George.
Dr. George was salutatorian for his graduating class at Morgan School, Petersburg, TN and received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Physics from Vanderbilt University. He was on the faculty at Vanderbilt U., Murray State College, KY, Furman U., Greenville, SC and was Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY, 1964-1988.
Dr. George was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, and held memberships in a number of professional organizations. He was the recipient of the 1976 award of the Kentucky Association for Progress in Science for making the greatest contribution to science in KY during that year. He has published papers in physics both in the U. S. and abroad and has been the recipient of other awards for his contributions to science.
His favorite activities included water aerobics, fine dining and symphony concerts. He had a lifelong camaraderie with pals from college days who took annual treks to the Smokies. He has explored and supported his love of science, history, nature, classical music and ballet, and has been an avid traveler throughout his life. He volunteered his financial expertise to senior citizens on a regular basis.
During World War II, Ted served in the Signal Corps in England, Belgium, France and Germany where he survived the Battle of the Bulge.
Ted is survived by numerous devoted nieces, nephews, friends and his beloved companion, Orpha Schrag. Nothing kept him from spending as much time as possible with family, always lending his gentle, enthusiastic and loving support. His kindness, his integrity, delightful sense of humor and insatiable curiosity will long be remembered by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 10 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and a Memorial Service with military honors will begin at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at Spring Hill Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ted M. George Scholarship fund at Eastern Kentucky University or a charity of your choice.
