I took Gene's art history class my senior year of high school, and despite much analytical prowess or artistic bent on my end, he was encouraging and kind but also honest. And definitely the coolest teacher I had. And my experiences in that class led to my pursuit of a minor in art history later.
Less than a decade later I was reading a biography of my most favorite painter ever, and who was mentioned in the book as the painter's assistant? Yep, Gene Sizemore, the coolest New Yorker ever. I was lucky to see Samantha sail through the 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes I taught with such grace, and when I volunteered at the Frist, there was Gene, on a ladder adjusting the lighting. In my many interactions with him, he did his job well and with integrity. He trusted and adored Sam. And he was always a straight shooter, funny and kind.
Much love to Gene and to his sweet family.
